proudly presents a night of music with the incredible musical talent of Catie Curtis in a special solo performance on Saturday, February 11th.

The Boston-area folk music scene is a vibrant one, boasting a variety of diverse artists. But if pressed to name the region's defining musician, it would have to be singer-songwriter Catie Curtis, who has called it home for nearly all of her twenty-year music career. Since the release of her last album in 2009, Curtis has toured extensively, playing a number of diverse venues ranging from Chicago's legendary Old Town School of Folk Music to the White House. She's also spent that time writing and testing out new material, developing a collection of masterfully written lyrics that serve as the heart of her newest record, Stretch Limousine on Fire.

On the new album, Curtis, a Lilith Fair alum who's been dubbed a "folk-rock goddess" by The New Yorker, delivers some of the finest material of her career: ten original songs that push at her own musical boundaries and explore "the difficult edges of passing events" in life, harsh realities that are tempered with moments of fleeting beauty. This temporary nature of life is a theme that pervades the album from the first notes. Opening song "Let It Last, which features folk powerhouse and former tour mate Mary Chapin Carpenter singing harmony, finds Curtis pleading "I know it can't last/And all I ask is let it last a little longer."

The sound, like the subject matter, is rawer than Curtis' previous work, which has been featured on episodes of Grey's Anatomy, Dawson's Creek and several other hit shows. "There's a lot of texture that makes you feel like you're really close to it," she explains.

That vibe is spirited, unique, and best embodied by the album's title track. "Stretch Limousine on Fire" is an infectious song whose central image takes on the idea that "when bad things happen, you sometimes take comfort in realizing they happen to everybody." It's this portrayal of universal life experiences, wrapped in Curtis' brand of evocative songwriting that won her the 2006 International Songwriting Competition, that appeals to her legions of dedicated fans.

With her Aspire to Inspire Endowment providing musical instruments to seven youth-oriented music organizations, a busy schedule officiating nontraditional weddings, and the fulltime job of raising two daughters with her partner, Catie Curtis is stretching her own boundaries to ensure that, despite the rough edges in life, there will always be those moments of beauty.

Driftwood Folk Café is a volunteer-run, 501(C)(3) not-for-profit corporation. Shows are generally held on the 2nd Saturday of the month at Plymouth’s Unitarian Universalist First Parish Church, downstairs in Kendall Hall, at 19 Town Square in Plymouth MA. Café-style seating as well as home-baked goods, a variety of tea, soft beverages, and, of course, delicious coffee help to ensure a tasty, intimate concert experience. We serve a variety of homebaked treats as well as an assortment of hot and cold beverages by donation before the show and during intermission.

Singer and songwriter Kris Delmhorst was raised in Brooklyn, NY. She trained in classical cello early on, then used her skills to land work with jazz bands and folk singers in the area. A move to Maine -- and a very long winter -- gave her time to learn to play the fiddle and guitar. In 1996, she relocated to Boston, MA, and was nominated for Outstanding Female Singer/Songwriter twice by the Boston Music Awards.

Kris Delmhorst's arresting 2008 album Shotgun Singer began as an act of solitary creation. Holed up in a rural cabin with minimal recording gear and a houseful of instruments, Delmhorst recorded her new songs alone and off the clock, in late night sessions that yielded layers of intimate vocals combined with nylon string and electric guitars, cellos, keyboards, and percussion. She treated the work like oil painting, allowing the canvas to breathe and change over the course of many months until the picture emerged. With the core of each song patiently assembled, she brought in a diverse cast of players to add sparse backing lines of drums, keys, guitar, and vinyl-based samples, and then signed on co-producer Sam Kassirer (Josh Ritter) in arrangement and mixing, enlisting him meanwhile to play keyboards and percussion on several songs. The result is collection of songs fully realized and even lush at times, but retaining a hushed intensity, a spirit of lo-fi intimacy and unhurried exploration.

With Shotgun Singer, Delmhorst has trained that voice on a series of gracefully open lyrics and figures that transcend genre, ranging into the borderlands between indie-rock and folk, that nameless territory inhabited by such hard-to-classify artists as Juana Molina, Feist, Iron & Wine, and Laura Veirs. Adventurous, elegant, lucid, and haunting, the record is the work of a musician at full stride who has found a musical language equal to her vision.

Bethel Steele has been writing music and playing guitar since the age of 14, but it wasn’t until a move to a small town outside of Poughkeepsie, New York at age 21, that Bethel began to perform with regularity. At a small dive bar, you’d find Bethel playing covers of songs by Ani DiFranco, the Indigo Girls, Josh Ritter and Susan Werner alongside Bethel’s own originals to a crowd that grew each month.

In addition to an eight-song EP, Beautiful Woman, Steele has also released a full-length self-produced studio album in 2009 entitled Come Home, which was the result of many musicians bringing in their own sound and adding it to the soulful lyrics and driving rhythmic guitar that has become a trademark of Bethel's music. The album has tastes of a country upbringing, dashes of pop and rock, but is nailed in the folk genre.

Bethel is currently back in the studio, working on a much-anticipated sophomore record that is scheduled to be released next Spring. This will be Bethel's first album working with producers and is a fan-funded project.

We recommend you guarantee your seat and buy in advance for $20 +$1 PayPal service fee. We are looking forward to bringing you our last show of 2011 on December 3rd, an evening with David Wilcox!

David Wilcox

Cleveland-born David Wilcox was inspired to play guitar after hearing a fellow college student playing in a stairwell. His lyrical insight is matched by a smooth baritone voice, virtuosic guitar chops, and creative open tunings, giving him a range and tenderness rare in folk music. He released an independent album in 1987, was a winner of the prestigious Kerrville Folk Festival New Folk award in 1988, and by 1989 he had signed with A&M Records. His first release on the label, ‘How Did You Find Me Here’, sold over 100,000 copies the first year largely by word of mouth. Now, 17 albums into a career marked by personal revelation and wildly loyal fans, David continues to find and deliver joy, inspiration, and invention.

Considered a 'songwriter's songwriter', his songs have been covered by artists such as k.d. lang and many others. In addition to his writing prowess, his skills as a performer and storyteller are unmatched. He holds audiences rapt with nothing more than a single guitar, thoroughly written songs, a fearless ability to mine the depths of human emotions of joy, sorrow and everything in between, and all tempered by a quick and wry wit.

Reflecting on well over 20 years of record-making and touring extensively around the US and world, Wilcox says, “Music still stretches out before me like the head-lights of a car into the night. It’s way beyond where I am, but it shows where I’m going. I used to think that my goal was to catch up, but now I’m grateful that the music is always going to be way out in front to inspire me.”

We hope you will be able to join us for this special solo show, what a treat this is going to be! Seats are still available but the show is already half sold, so we recommend you buy in advance if you plan to attend. Seats are $25 in advance and $28 at the door if available.

All the best, and Happy Holidays to you and your loved ones!

Carlyn, Lynn, and all of the Driftwood volunteers

DRIFTWOOD IS SOCIALLY NETWORKED!
Did you know that one of the best ways to get quick updates about our series is on Facebook and Twitter? We are well into our fourth season, and we cannot tell you how much we enjoy bringing these wonderful musicians into our community to share their talents with us.

Our next show is on November 19th, featuring David Mallett with opening act (and Plymouthian) Jake Hill!

The cool breezes of Maine’s northlands have flowed through the songs of David Mallett for nearly four decades. In addition to being featured on his fourteen albums, Mallett’s pen has provided material for an eclectic list of artists that includes Pete Seeger, Alison Kraus, Emmylou Harris, Kathy Mattea, John Denver and the Muppets. His tune, The Garden Song, is one of America’s most popular folk songs, having been recorded more than 150 times and sung around the world. He has toured consistently in folk clubs, concert halls and festivals for thirty years.

His new album, Alright Now, marks the apex of a musical career that began when Mallett was eleven years old, playing in a country and folk duo with his five-year-older brother, Neil. Discovering the music of singer-songwriters like Gordon Lightfoot and Bob Dylan, as an acting student at the University of Maine, Mallett began writing his own songs. “Up until that point, I thought of myself as a singer,” he said. “In college, everybody that was singing also wrote. I realized that that was what I wanted to do. I was a theater major. I felt short-changed that I had to speak someone else’s words. I felt that, if I became a singer-songwriter, I could sing my own words.”

David Mallett’s songs are filled with passion, evocative imagery, and a sense of the inevitable passage of time. The struggle of the common man and the loss of American towns and landscapes are the subjects of many of his songs. Although it is rooted in place, Mallett’s music speaks to the essential things that move us all. If you grow up in a small rural town, as Mallett did, you can’t help but learn its stories. He knows the factory work, the field work, the memories of summer dances, the loves and losses, and the stunning incidents of courage and despair.

Jake Hill is a singer/songwriter from Plymouth, Massachusetts, from across the country, and from down the street. He has miles on his voice, blisters on his fingers, and stories to tell. Though born and raised in America’s Hometown, it was the American Southwest where he found himself. Then he came home. Jake has released four full-length LP’s and a handful of EP’s, and has performed from Boston to Austin in front of audiences as intimate as a couple of bottle-throwing drunks and as rowdy as thousands of fancy people doing fancy things.

We are looking forward to seeing you on November 19th! Upon returning recently from the U.K. this fall where they spread their contagious brand of quirky Americana from Glasgow to Penzance, the band completed work on their fourth studio album, “The Grand Slambovians”. The advent of “The Grand Slambovians” is both the band’s latest reincarnation and the title of their new soul stirring CD. "These are great songs, captured in a chaotic, unstoppable and barely describable landslide of an album." Acoustic Magazine June 2011

Joziah Longo, (lead singer/songwriter for the band) describes the new collection of songs as - "A more extreme dose of what we've always been – a country prison music meets British invasion type of thing". For the uninitiated, the band's all over the map melodic avant folk conjures Tom Petty, Dinosour Jr., and a fuller Buffalo Tom, possessing an exotic instrumental arsenal in addition to standard rock regalia. Equal parts Washington Irving and Woodstock, the band taps a broad palette of styles ranging from dusty Americana ballads to huge Pink Floydesque cinematic anthems. Playing art school roots rock, sometimes folk and quirky Americana, they possess an exotic instrumental arsenal (accordion, cello, mandolin, theremin) in addition to standard rock regalia. "The entire root system of Rock Family Trees is embedded in Longo's voice."- The Big Issue, Scotland, U.K.

Together since the late 90's where they met in art school, Gandalf Murphy & The Slambovian Circus of Dreams are shedding their skin and come out boldly as 'The Grand Slambovians' in 2011 touring the U.S., Canada, and the U.K. in support of their latest creative effort. Unleashing their hauntingly signature songs on the world once again, the new album is getting rave reviews on both sides of the Atlantic. Manically melodic, the bold, new songs knit into the band’s classics like an old paisley quilt wrapped around a very large family. The ultimate DIY’ers, the band runs its own label and has previously released 3 critically acclaimed studio albums - 'The Great Unravel' (2008), 2004's double-disc 'Flapjacks from the Sky', 'A Good Thief Tips His Hat' (1998). This October they will once again bring their legendary Halloween show, 'The Grand Slambovian Halloween Ball' to London's Electric Ballroom and NYC's Gramercy Theater. The band has toured nationally and abroad since forming in 1998. Known for electrifying live performances and great original music, they have a devoted and growing international fan base. www.slambovia.com

Driftwood Folk Café is a volunteer-run, 501(C)(3) non-profit corporation. In order to provide the highest quality listening atmosphere for all, this is an alcohol-free and non-smoking venue. Children are always welcome with adult supervision, provided they are attentive and courteous. This program is supported in part by grants from the Kingston and Plymouth Cultural Councils, local agencies which are supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency. In 2010, Liz received first prize in the BMI John Lennon Scholarship competition, grand prize in the International Acoustic Music Award contest (among 9,000 entries) as well as the Chris Austin Songwriting Award. She also appeared at the Newport and Rocky Mountain folk festivals. In 2009, Liz garnered first place in the Rocky Mountain Folk Fest Songwriter Showcase, and was co-winner of the Mountain Stage NewSong Contest, among several other honors.

Liz is highly regarded for her personal, emotionally engaging songwriting. John Mayer has called her music “gorgeous… just gorgeous” and the Washington Post has said “This voice won’t stay small (for) long.” Liz has opened for Shawn Colvin, Paula Cole, Nanci Griffith, Amos Lee, Colin Hay, Crowded House, Jesse Colin Young, Jonathan Edwards, Lori McKenna and Livingston Taylor. www.lizlongley.com

Despite his relatively young age Glier is a seasoned troubadour, traveling all over the United States and performing over 200 dates a year. In 2010 he opened for Edwin McCain and The Verve Pipe, appeared with his idol James Taylor and performed on main stages of the prestigious Falcon Ridge and Kerrville Folk Festivals, with rave reviews and a constantly-expanding fan base following him every step of the way. “I’m an ambassador,” Glier explains. “I travel from place to place carrying my songs and stories with me, and I want people to leave my show changed. Some people won’t remember the songs I sing, but they will remember how they felt while hearing them. That’s what I want to do – to remind people, including myself, why we’re here: to connect!”

Glier doesn’t just concern himself with connecting with paying audiences, either. Along the massive tour behind his MPress debut, “The Trouble With People,” Glier, an environmentalist and altruist used his music to make a difference wherever he could. His “green” CD release tour involved organizing tree planting parties in cities along the tour route (which he reached in his hybrid Toyota Prius); promoting carpools for fans to attend his shows; selling t-shirts made out of organic materials, and more. www.sethglier.com

Driftwood Folk Café is a volunteer-run, 501(C)(3) non-profit corporation. In order to provide the highest quality listening atmosphere for all, this is an alcohol-free and non-smoking venue. Children are always welcome with adult supervision, provided they are attentive and courteous. This program is supported in part by a grant from the Plymouth Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency. Tickets may be purchased for $17 in advance or $20 at 7:30 pm at the door the day of the show (if available). Watch for upcoming shows with Gandalf Murphy & the Slambovian Circus of Dreams as well as David Wilcox!

###

This press release is available at www.driftwoodfolkcafe.com. For additional information on shows, sponsorships or to schedule artist interviews please contact Lynn Holdsworth at (508) 224-7024 or email Lynn at lynn@driftwoodfolkcafe.com.

Summer Greetings from Driftwood Folk Cafe!

Hello and happy summer to all of you! Seats are $25 and available for advance purchase on our website. As of this mailing, we only have 16 seats left and are not likely to have any available at the door the night of the show, so please purchase them online if you are planning to attend. As always, doors open at 7:30 and the show starts at 8.

In other big news, we are honored to have been recognized by the Plymouth Cultural Council for our efforts to bring the arts to Plymouth - the council awarded us one of four ARTYs at their annual awards ceremony last Friday night! While we attended the awards ceremony and were there to receive the ARTY, this award belongs to all of you in the Driftwood community who have made this organization all that it is! Many thanks to: our audience members for coming out to the shows and talking us up to your friends and the community, all of our volunteers for their dedication and hard work, Ed McGee Audio for giving such great sound, and the artists for presenting amazing performances and talking us up to their managers and peers. Most of all, we'd like to thank the Plymouth Cultural Council for promoting the arts in Plymouth, for the grants they award us and other organizations, and for their vote of confidence in our series by recognizing us with this award. We could not run this series without the support from all of you, so our hat’s off to you!

We hope to see you on the 14th, but if not, have a wonderful summer and see you next season!

All the best,

Carlyn and Lynn

DRIFTWOOD IS SOCIALLY NETWORKED!
Did you know that one of the best ways to get quick updates about our series is on Facebook and Twitter?
